A size 9-Point Font Executive Resume and The Challenges Associated with It

Sure, a 9-point font size will provide sufficient real estate space on your executive resume for you to include a boat load of career highlights, but is it really effective and beneficial to you in the long term? Let’s take a look at a few challenges associated with responding to a prospective employer’s job opportunity with a resume written in 9-point font size.

For starters, when writing your senior leadership career marketing materials in the most effective resume format, consider your audience.  The human reviewer may vary in age; therefore, you’ll want to consider using a font size around 10.5 or 11 at a minimum to ensure high readability across a wide range of recipients, mobile devices, and laptops.

Considering that most professional resumes are quickly scanned over for only about 7-10 seconds, put your best foot forward by writing a visually engaging resume format in a legible font. Know that your executive resume is not a bio; however, it is a strategically branded marketing document. Hence, you will want to avoid cluttering your professional resume with details that might be best discussed during an interview.  Write your resume to reflect your most valuable and compelling contributions within each leadership role. This may result in the exclusion of some information in the resume which may prove useful for highlighting in your LinkedIn profile.

Avoid the “death by bullets” syndrome. As opposed to 7-9 bullets per job, try going with 3-5 concisely crafted bullets that highlight the scope of your leadership role and accomplishments. Though you will want to provide a good base of career information for a prospective employer to evaluate your qualifications, another option is to determine if some of your earlier jobs can be summarized into a section titled Prior Experience.

As tempting as it may be, forgo viewing your resume as the only tool for communicating your value.  At the end of the day, you have your executive resume, LinkedIn profile, cover letter, and bio. And if you are really teaching savvy, you can also create an online web portfolio for conveying your unique story.

Whatever you decide, good luck with it!
